Moving & Downsizing for Older Adults

Is this you?

You need someone you can trust to manage the details of your move and act as your advocate and guide. You want to simplify your life and move, but need a helping hand to make it a reality. Perhaps you don’t have family or friends to help with a transition of this magnitude.

You’re the adult child of a parent who needs to move out of their home of many years. You may be concerned they’re no longer safe living in their home, and you live too far away or are busy juggling your own life to manage the many details of a move.

You don’t have plans to move anytime soon, but are having difficulty maintaining and organizing areas of your home due to physical limitations or lack of energy.

At Real Order, we have a passion for organizing and setting up systems for the way you live now. As Senior Relocation Specialists, we use those skills to help older adults going through the transition of “Right-Sizing” their home and lives for today’s needs. For seniors, it typically involves moving to a home with less square footage. We understand the overwhelming and complex issues that come into play and serve as your advocate and guide to empower you to make good decisions.

With patience and understanding, we assist seniors and their families with all aspects of the downsizing and moving process. At your direction, we communicate with family members and involve them as much as you would like them to be involved.

Our “White Glove” move management service gives you peace of mind and a single point of contact during the entire transition to your new home. We greatly reduce the stress that can have a big impact on your physical and emotional well-being.  We support and affirm you throughout the entire process and treat you like family.

Downsizing Your Home

If you’re planning on staying in your home but need help to make it fit the way you live now, our “Rightsizing Your Home” services may be just what you need. Through the years, it’s common to accumulate many possessions that are no longer needed or wanted. We can open the space so it’s safe, comfortable and organized again.

Here are some ways Real Order can help:

  • Declutter your home of excess possessions
  • Donate or assist in selling things you no longer need
  • Eliminate excess paper and organize what’s worth keeping
  • Arrange your home so it reflects how you live now
  • Refer you to a Certified Aging-in-Place remodeling specialist, if needed

As a Circle of Service Member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers, we are bound by a pledge of integrity and a Code of Ethics.  We are committed to safety, privacy and continuing professional development.

Client Success Story

Betty initially came to us seeking help with organizing her paperwork and ensuring her bills were paid on time. Her husband of 50+ years had always handled the family’s finances, but had Alzheimer’s now. Betty was very anxious about her abilities to assume these new responsibilities, now that she was in her 80’s. She had no idea how much money they had, which only added to her anxiety.

Together, we made sense out of the many files Betty’s husband had accumulated through the years. Her fears were alleviated as we organized her files, got rid of unnecessary papers, and talked about the things that concerned her. We continued to meet every few weeks to ensure the organization was maintained and kept up-to-date.

Eventually, Betty decided to move from her four-bedroom house into an apartment in a retirement community. We carefully packed and supervised the move, helped with furniture placement, unpacked, and got her settled into her new apartment in no time at all. She’s made lots of new friends and is in a much healthier and safe environment now.
